'A Princess of Mars', by Edgar Rice Burroughs, was the first novel/book that my father ever read, around the age of thirteen. I've selected this extract because my father was not a God-fearing man, but he certainly showed great intrigue about life beyond this Earthly realm.
Simply replace the word, 'Mars' with whatever we believe is beyond our lives, and I think the extract is very suitable.
Chapter III
My Advent on Mars
I opened my eyes upon a strange and weird landscape. I knew that I was on Mars; not once did I question either my sanity or my wakefulness. I was not asleep, no need for pinching here; my inner consciousness told me as plainly that I was upon Mars as your conscious mind tells you that you are upon Earth. You do not question the fact; neither did I.

I am I and you are you, whatever we were to each other that we still are.
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was.
